| The state flower of Virginia, this white flowering dogwood should reach a height
of 15 ft. and a width of 15-20 ft. It blooms in the spring, and usually
remains showy for 2-3 weeks. The inflorescence consists of four showy petal-like
bracts surrounding a cluster of tiny inconspicuous yellowish flowers. The bracts
are 1-2 in long and obovate in shape, usually with a cleft at the
tip. Clusters of bright red football shaped fruits, about a half inch long,
follow the flowers.
Reed Square has three dogwoods. The large one right of the crape myrtles was was donated by Robyn Brickner Krassas in memory of her husband, Steve Krassas.
